DTF printing explained: what is behind the method?

In short

DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a method in which designs are printed onto a special film and then transferred to the garment with a heat press. It allows vivid, detailed prints on almost all fabrics – including dark garments. DTF is particularly well suited to multi-colour logos and small to medium runs.

How does DTF printing work?

In the DTF process, the design is first printed in mirror image onto a PET film. An adhesive powder is then sprinkled on and cured. The finished transfer film is applied to the garment with a heat press. The advantage over screen printing: no screens need to be made, which makes DTF economical even for small runs.

Strengths of the DTF method

DTF allows fine details, colour gradients and strong colours even on dark fabrics without pre-treating the garment. The design can be used on cotton, polyester and blended fabrics. Durability is good with correct care. Multi-colour company logos, crests or slogans with different fonts look great with DTF.

Limits of DTF printing

The printed area sits on the fabric as a thin layer, which some people find less breathable. Very large print areas can be more expensive than with other methods. When washing, the garment should be turned inside out to extend the life of the design. Pay attention to the care label of the respective garment.

Frequently asked questions

Is DTF printing suitable for company logos?

Yes, especially if the logo has several colours or fine details. DTF delivers sharp edges and strong colours even on dark garments. For simple one- or two-colour logos, there are sometimes cheaper alternatives such as screen printing.

How long does a DTF print last?

With proper care – washing at low temperatures, washing inside out, no tumble drying – DTF prints last many years. As with all printing methods, poor care shortens the lifespan considerably. You will find the exact instructions on the care label.

Is DTF different from classic transfer printing?

Yes. DTF is a fully digital process without ready-made designs – every design is produced individually. Classic transfer printing often uses simpler inks and does not last as long. DTF is clearly superior to simple transfer printing in quality and flexibility.
