Digital printing on textiles – what you need to know

In short

In digital printing (also DTG, Direct-to-Garment), ink is applied directly to the garment with a special printer. This allows highly detailed, multi-colour designs with no extra cost for additional colours. The method is particularly suited to complex logos and small to medium runs.

What does digital printing on textiles mean?

Digital printing – often called DTG (Direct-to-Garment) – describes methods in which ink is printed directly onto the garment. The fabric is loaded into a special printer, much like paper. This allows high-resolution designs with colour gradients, fine lines and many colours, without having to make a separate screen for each colour.

Advantages over other methods

The greatest strength of digital printing is flexibility: complex logos, photo motifs or multi-colour designs can be produced with no extra cost per colour. Small runs are also possible without the price per piece rising sharply. For teams that need many different designs or individual variants, digital printing is especially practical.

Limitations of digital printing

Digital printing gives the best results on light cotton garments. On dark fabrics, a base layer is usually applied so the colours look opaque – this is slightly noticeable to the touch and to the eye. High polyester content in the fabric can lead to colour deviations. Durability is good with correct care, but the base layer material is more sensitive to incorrect washing conditions.

When is digital printing worthwhile?

Digital printing is a good option for company shirts with photorealistic designs, club clothing with complex crests, or events with short lead times. For very large runs with a single-colour logo, screen printing is generally cheaper. Mention it in your enquiry if your design contains many colours or gradients, so that the right method can be chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have photos or photorealistic logos printed on T-shirts?

With digital printing, that is possible. The requirement is a high-resolution image file – at least 150 dpi at print size. This works best on white or light cotton garments. The darker the fabric, the more complex the print becomes.

Does digital printing last as long as screen printing?

With good care – washing at low temperatures, washing inside out, no tumble dryer – digital prints last many years. In a direct comparison, screen printing on smooth, light fabric can be somewhat more durable. In everyday use the difference is small if the care label is followed.

Are there minimum quantities for digital printing?

At Macherkleidung.de the guide price starts from 10 pieces – regardless of the printing method. For very small quantities, digital printing can be more economical than screen printing because no screens have to be made.
